Olaf studied surveying with a focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Hannover, and on a postgraduate level, urban planning and design in Hamburg and Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). Since then, he has been working at the interface of planning and GIS / geovisualization. His research interests are the use of geovisualizations and GIS in planning, user research on interactivity, and the communication of climate change through geovisualization. In his dissertation at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Planning (IRL) at ETH Zurich, he developed and tested interactive landscape visualizations for the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch case study site. In November 2008, Dr. Schroth joined CALP at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he is analyzing the benefits and limitations of landscape visualization as tools for the communication of climate change scenarios in planning.
